10 Tips for Search Engine Optimisation

I have promised in other articles that returning to Search Engine Optimisation tips would be a regular feature. The reason for this is that I believe that getting to page 1 of the results in the search engines is not about doing one thing right, it is about doing 500 things right.

As I am writing this I am thinking what a good idea it will be to eventually create a list of 500 search engine optimisation tips. Think how useful that would be!

So for today, here are my 10 tips. They are in no particular order and in view of what I have said above, they are far from exhaustive. However, I believe they are all very important.

10 Tips for Search Engine Optimisation

1. Forget about Meta Keywords Tags

OK, yes I know I cannot convince you not to use this. That is why I offer control of the keywords meta tag in the AB Publish control panel. But perhaps I can persuade you to spend very little time on it. Google and most other search engines ignore it. Those that do use it, place very little importance on it. So put in your most important key phrases but do it quickly and move on to more important tasks.

2. Try for One Way Inbound Links but do not discount reciprocal links

Most people know that each inbound link is a vote for your site that can help increase its importance in the eyes of a search engine. A link that is not reciprocated is worth so much more as they have voted for your site without you returning the favour. However, many sites require a back-link and as these are relatively easy to obtain, you should go fir it. Especially as it vastly increases the chance of your site being spidered.

3. Be verbose

Search engines love text. The more the better. Write the text on your site in a natural style and forget about counting key phrase occurrences and the like. If the text is readable and on-topic, it will help you in the search engines.

4. Put key phrases in your hyperlinks

Don't go over the top for this one. People will expect to see a link that says "Home" as opposed to "Buy super-widgets online". But wherever there is an opportunity to link to a page on your site with a key phrase in the hyperlink then go for it.

5. Add new content

Search engines love enormous websites, especially those that continue to grow. This blog is our way of ensuring that this website continues to grow and articles and/or a blog on your site will help you enormously in the long-term.

6. Add something free and useful

If you can, try and find something that will be useful to potential customers. The more useful it is, the more likely they are to be talking about your site on forums and in blogs, thus vastly increasing the number of inbound links.

7. Avoid Flash

If you must have fancy widgets and animations on your website, then HTML5 is around the corner and will allow you to replace Flash for many of its functions. It will also be search engine friendly which Flash most certainly is not.

8. Do not replace text with images

Images should illustrate your site. If you use them in place of text it could harm your position in the search engine results, even with the use of ALT text.

 9. Add a listing to DMOZ

Add listings to as many directories as you can but the Open Directory Project should be first on your list. Be patient though! It can take months to get listed on here. Which is quite appropriate because:

10. Be patient

The best and longer-lasting successes in search engine optimisation take time. Keep doing the right things with your site and the results will follow... eventually
