Search Engine OptimisationYou can easily create your own Business Website using the AB Publish Website Creation System.
The online interface is designed to be the simplest control panel around – you just type in the text and upload your photos.

But if you wish the maximum number of people to find and view your website, you need to be visible on the Search Engines.

Not only to you need to be visible on the Search Engines, but you need to be as highly placed on the Search Engines as well. This is called Search Engine Optimisation.

We have already written several articles on this subject (The Secrets of Search Engine Optimisation, The Most Important Search Optimisation Tip, 10 Tips for Search Engine Optimisation…)

However, there is one thing you can do immediately and easily using your AB Publish Website Creation Software control panel to improve the optimisation of your website for the Search Engines…perfect your titles.

Search Engine Optimisation and the importance of titles

Every Search Engine uses different rules to determine how relevant your website is to any particular search term. These rules are often a closely guarded secret else every website would implement techniques to ensure they appeared at the top of the list. This makes it impossible to form generic solutions to improve the position of your Business Website on the Search Engines.

There is however some good news – almost all of the Search Engines use the titles of your Website Pages to determine the relevancy of the content to the search query being entered. It’s similar to what we humans do – when choosing a book the title is the first thing you would look at to determine whether the book is relevant to your particular tastes.

I am constantly amazed by the number of Business Website pages which do not take advantage of this fact. It is surprising how many pages are simply labelled “Home Page” or just the company name (for example – Marks and Spencer home page is labelled “Marks & Spencer”). There are even whole Business Websites where the page title is the same on every single page!

They are missing out on an opportunity to optimise their websites. Search Engines send out robots to read through and index website pages. The title is one of the first things the robots look at, and it is extremely important for almost all of the various Search Engine sites.

Optimise your Page Titles now!

Include some of the keywords you are targeting in the title of the pages of your Business Website.
For just two real-life examples, the home pages of PC World and Debenhams do not follow the Marks and Spencer trend of simply including the company name. Instead the titles are “Laptops, Desktops, iPads, Printers, Gaming and more here at PC World” and “Designer Clothes, Beauty, Homeware, Electricals & Gifts – Debenhams”

This boosts their chances of Search Engines indexing the websites under the relevant search queries.

When you create your own Business Website using the AB Publish Website Creation System, the titles can be set to whatever value you want.

Simply log-in to the online interface and select the page you wish to modify.
Click the cog icon to change page settings and the value opposite Page Heading is the value which will be used for the page titles.
Enter the title containing the relevant keywords and click update.
The page on your Business Website has now been updated.
It is as easy as that.

What makes great Website Page titles?

Each Search Engine displays and indexes a different number of characters in their databases:

Google shows 69 Characters (Including Spaces) for Page Title.
Yahoo shows up to 72 Characters (Including Spaces) for a Page Title.
Bing shows 65 Characters (Including Spaces) for a Page Title Tag.
Ask shows 69 Characters (Including Spaces) for an SEO Page Title.

The safest is therefore to limit the page title to around 65 characters in length.

Try to use different keywords on different pages of your website.
It is important that the keywords relate to the actual content on the page.
Also, the order of the keywords is thought to be important – both Debenhams and PC World put the name of the shop last, and ensure the actual keywords are the first elements of the page title.

It is so easy to use AB Publish Website Creation System to update and optimize your page titles that it is a mistake not to.
